Pet Boarding: Packing Your Pet’s Suitcase
You have been planning for your vacation and attending to every detail. Now, like a good pet mom or dad, it’s time to pack your pet’s suitcase for his or her boarding experience.
Boarding your pet does require some thoughtful organization, not only to make your pet feel right at home, but to make things easier on the facility’s staff members.
Here are a few helpful tips to assist in the prep of your dog or cat’s travel bag:
- Provide medical records to your boarding facility. Medical records often include: proof of rabies vaccination, Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccination and any medications your pet may need during the stay. You will also want to document any allergies your pet may have to food or other allergens. With this being said, make sure your pet’s shots are up-to-date, calling ahead of time to ask the boarding facility what they require.
- Make sure your pet’s collar and ID are up-to-date. Having a tag made with your cell phone number on it will be helpful for quick contact.
- Label all of your pet’s personal items including blankets and toys that you plan to send with them to the boarding facility. This helps the staff keep your pet’s items organized. Making a list of these items, and leaving it with the staff will guarantee everything is returned and ‘checked off the list’ provided.
- Pack your pet’s favorite food, if it is different than what the boarding facility provides. Keeping your pup or cat on a regiment will keep their stomachs happy while you’re away. Instructions for feeding schedule are also helpful.
- Don’t forget your pet’s favorite toy. Whether it’s a stuffed animal or interactive toy the staff can entice your pet with, sending items that are familiar makes the experience so much better for your pet.
Traveling and boarding your pet needs not be stressful, if you have everything in order.
Once you have a great list of items to pack, keep a list and use it every time your pet is boarded. Don’t forget to ask your pet boarding facility, upon your return, if there are any other items you could provide for future stays. In most cases, a great boarding facility will fill in the gaps and provide as much as is needed for your pet to have an enjoyable, fun and comfortable time, while you’re away.
